Does the new siddur extend the length of the shabbat morning service?
Answer
Not at all. The new Siddur offers options within its first two sections of the Shabbat Morning Service – Birchot Hashachar and P’sukei d’zimra. One may abbreviate these two sections to permit an extended study passage taken from the study anthology and brief discussion during the Birchot Hashahar or a d’var Torah before the Torah reading. Indeed, these are three options of Torah service again permitting the congregation to shorten this section of the service. On the other hand, one may opt to have to have full Birchot Hashachar and P’sukei d’zimra sections, much of their contents sung to either traditional or contemporary musical settings and omit the study passage, select the abbreviated Torah service and later the abbreviated prayers for the Queen, Israel, mourners, the sick and the community.
