The traditional Alenu first paragraph stresses the special relationship that Israel has with God and our role as witnesses to God in the world. The traditional second paragraph expresses the hope that all peoples will turn to our God. However the special nature of God's relationship with Israel does not rule out the fact that other peoples and faiths also have a relationship with God and a task (Amos 9:7; Micah 4:5) so the alternative versions stress the need for us to be partners with them in repairing the world.
